How to Pick the Best Marketing Channels for Your Business

Updated: Sep 25

Marketing can feel overwhelming with so many platforms to choose from — there’s Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, and new platforms seemingly popping up all the time. Though it might seem like a good idea to be everywhere, it's actually more effective to focus on just one or two key channels when establishing your brand in the online space.

While it can be tempting to cast a wide net to try and create a presence in as many places as possible so that you reach a larger audience, it’s both more efficient and valuable to focus your efforts on fewer platforms.

Let’s discuss why prioritizing a few marketing channels is important, how to choose the right ones, and when it makes sense to expand to more.

Quality Over Quantity

Trying to be on too many platforms can spread your efforts too thin, leading to lower quality content and weaker connections with your audience.

While it’s easy to consider social media as one entity, each platform is unique and requires a different approach. By concentrating on one or two channels, you can really hone in on your strategy, thereby creating better content that truly connects with your audience.

You're able to show up more consistently, meaning your relationship with your followers will grow as they begin to trust and recognize your brand, which is key for long-term success.

Know Your Audience

To choose the right channels, you need to know where your audience is — remember, you need to go to THEM, not trust them to find YOU. You can find this out by researching which platform your target demographic prefers. For example, younger audiences might be on Instagram or TikTok, while professionals might use LinkedIn more.

Another great way to decide on your platform is to see where your competitors are active and successful. You can study their content, see what works and doesn't work, and use this knowledge to guide your own strategy.

Be Sure to Measure Success & Set Clear Goals

Simply put, you can't achieve your objectives if you don't set clear goals. Otherwise, how will you know if your efforts are paying off?

Ask yourself, do you want more website visits, more sales, or better brand awareness? What are you hoping to achieve through the platform(s) you choose? Having specific goals will help you focus and measure your progress. Of course, deciding on goals can be an overwhelming process in itself, so if you're looking for guidance on goal setting and measuring success, I'll have a blog post about it coming your way soon, and I'm always happy to chat and set up a free consultation.

After all, marketing isn’t one-size-fits-all! You need to regularly check your analytics to see what's working and what isn’t. If one channel is performing well, consider putting more effort there. If another isn’t, it might be time to try a different approach or even phase it out.

When to Expand

You might consider adding more channels when you're excelling on your primary ones, have a deep understanding of your audience, and possess the resources to manage additional platforms. This last point is crucial — overextending can negatively impact the performance of your successful channels.

If you decide to branch out, do it slowly. Add one new channel at a time and see how it goes. Make sure the new channel fits with your overall marketing goals and adds value to your strategy (aka, you might not even need the channel, so don't expand for the sake of expanding).

Ok - that was a lot of information, so - let’s recap!

Key Takeaways

  1. In marketing, focusing on a few key channels can make a big difference. It allows you to create better content, build stronger connections, and measure your success more effectively.

  2. Understand your audience, meet them where they are are, set clear goals, and use analytics to guide AND optimize your efforts.

  3. When you’re ready to expand, do it strategically (and at the right time) and make sure you have the bandwidth to do so.

  4. By following these steps, you’ll be able to navigate the marketing world with confidence and grow your business successfully.
